Sung
The road lives in a mouth.
Two records
A singer is not a novel
The mouth
Jeliw keep the road
Among Manding peoples the epic of Sunjata is a living office. Jeliw (often called griots in French and English) sing, recite, and play it. Versions differ by lineage, occasion, and performer. That variance is the tradition, not a defect in a missing original.
The page
Niane is not the epic
D. T. Niane’s Soundjata ou l’épopée mandingue (1960), later English as Sundiata: An Epic of Old Mali, is a literary reconstruction after Mamadou Kouyaté. It is reception. It is not a field recording. Do not cite it as the tablets of Mali.
This page is a door onto a sung road. It is not a substitute for a night of performance. Scholarly English performances, such as Fa-Digi Sisòkò’s recitation published by John William Johnson, sit closer to the mouth than Niane’s prose.
Before exile
A buffalo, a woman, a child who cannot walk
Sogolon
The ugly woman of the prophecy
Versions tell of a buffalo ravaging a land, of hunters, of Sogolon Kedjou given in marriage to Maghan Kon Fatta of Niani. She is not a court beauty. The prophecy runs through her anyway.
The child
Lameness first
The boy cannot walk. Co-wives mock. A name and a delay sit in the same household. When he stands, versions say, it is with iron, with a staff, with a force that rearranges the compound.
Do not sand this into an underdog template. The insult, the body, and the prophecy are Mande political myth, not a self-help arc.
Geography
A bend of river. A battlefield of tradition.
The Niger world is certain. Any one capital and any one battle-line are claims of tradition.
Niger bend / Mande
CertainThe world of the singers. Towns, lineages, and the river are historical. The epic is not a surveyor’s book.
Niani
TraditionalOften named as Sunjata’s town. Archaeology and epic do not lock one village as the capital of a novel.
Kirina
TraditionalThe defeat of Sumanguru in many recitations. A traditional battlefield, not a GPS pin from 1235.
A thirteenth-century date is later chronology laid over song. Use it as a historian’s tool. Do not let it impersonate a diary.
Exile
The sequence is sung, not staged
After the compound becomes impossible, the road is years of other courts.
01
The compound
Co-wives, a lame child, a throne already crowded. Departure is political weather, not a mystical call.
02
Sogolon on the road
Mother and son travel. Hospitality is uneven. Some courts take them. Some send them on.
03
Balla Fasséké
The jeli is not a mentor with a staff from a studio handbook. He is the memory of a lineage, stolen or sent, who will speak the king into being.
04
Sumanguru
The Sosso king as antagonist: sorcerer, tyrant, rival charter. Versions disagree on his end. Disagreement is information.
05
Kirina
Return as war. A coalition. A secret, a cock’s spur, a name. Do not freeze one episode as the only Kirina.
06
A polity, not a household
What is founded is Mande kingship as the singers tell it. This is not Ithaca. Home is a people arranged, not a marriage bed tested.
Office
The jeli is the road’s memory
Without the singer the king has no name that lasts.
A page can list episodes. It cannot do the jeli’s work: praise, blame, genealogy, music, the right to speak a past in front of the living. To write Sunjata in English is already a translation of office.
Campbell will try to hire the jeli as a mentor. Refuse that hire. The singer is not a helper on someone else’s wheel. The singer is how the road exists in time.

Performances, reconstructions, arguments
Johnson’s edition of Fa-Digi Sisòkò is a performance on the page, with Manding lineation and notes. Conrad’s prose versions gather other recitations. Niane is a mid-century literary work. Austen’s In Search of Sunjata is scholarship about how the epic has been used.
There is no single authentic Sunjata waiting behind the versions. The versions are the thing.

Pattern later
Exile and return will look, from a distance, like a monomyth. Up close they are a charter of Mande kingship, kept by specialists, changing with each night. Van Gennep does not own Sogolon’s road. A studio hero’s journey does not own Kirina.
The pattern is a lens. The singer is the road.
