Frameworks
Maps beside maps. None of them is the territory.
Same road. Different attention. These are not five versions of one diagram.
Shared specimen
One road, held still
The Odyssey is used here because it already lives in these pages. It is not a template. If a framework cannot speak to it cleanly, the gap stays visible.

1949 · comparative mythology
Joseph Campbell
He belongs in the conversation. He does not own the map.
What this map notices
Recurrence, crossing, trial, transformation, return.
What it can hide
Cultural specificity, stories without return, collective roads, later gendered defaults, Penelope’s unmoving siege.
- Departure: call, refusal, aid, threshold, belly of the whale.
- Initiation: trials, goddess, temptress, atonement, apotheosis, boon.
- Return: refusal, flight, rescue, crossing, two worlds, freedom to live.

1909 · ethnography of rites
Arnold van Gennep
Separation. Liminal passage. Incorporation. A rite of passage, not a movie beat sheet.
What changes when someone crosses from one social state into another?
Known
Separation
Prior status is left. Clothes, names, places change.
Between
Limen
Ordinary law is suspended or altered. The middle must feel unlike the sides.
New state
Incorporation
Re-entry under a restored or changed status.
Three-zone threshold diagram: known world, liminal field, new social state. Not a circle.
What this map notices
Thresholds that are socially real: washing, disguise, marriage, funeral, pilgrimage’s in-between.
What it can hide
Adventure structure as such. Twenty years of weather is not automatically a rite.
1969 · social anthropology
Victor Turner
What happens in the in-between, especially between people.
Structure
Roles. Rank. Ordinary law.
Liminal field
Betwixt and between
Communitas may arise here: an unstructured bond among those stripped of rank. Possible. Not guaranteed. Hunger, a chain, a cave are also in-betweens.
Return of form
Altered relation, or the old one restored.
Field diagram: structure, a liminal field that may hold communitas, then reincorporation. Turner grows from van Gennep without becoming a hero cycle.
1928 · folklore morphology
Vladimir Propp
Functions in Russian wonder tales. Sequence before symbolism.
What if we look at what characters do rather than what their journey means?
Corpus
Russian wonder tales.
Unit
Function: an act defined by its place in the tale.
Question
What actions recur, and in what order?
Limit
Not a universal psychology of story.
- Absentation
- Villainy
- Donor
- Agent
- Struggle
- Return
- Recognition
- Wedding
Selected functions in sequence, not the complete thirty-one. Completeness here would be unreadable, and would imply a law the book does not claim for epic.

Psychology of images
C. G. Jung
What if the journey is also read as a movement in psychic life?
Archetypes, for Jung, are patterns of psychic life encountered in dreams, images, and culture. Campbell read him. Later screenwriting “Hero / Shadow / Mentor” charts often read Campbell’s Jung, not Jung. That flattening is refused here.
What this map notices
Why certain figures feel larger than biography. Shadow, anima and animus, Self as process.
What it can hide
History, local theology, gender politics, the intention of a Sumerian or Homeric text.
Same story, different maps
Change the map. Keep the road.
The sequence itself: a household, a war already over, delay, descent, a held man, a return, a bed that proves a marriage.

Resemblance is not influence.
Campbell read van Gennep and Jung.
Turner built on van Gennep.
Vogler adapted Campbell for studios.
Propp’s corpus is elsewhere.
Lines of later comparison are not arrows of descent.

Where the map stops helping
A missing line may be the honest one
Campbell
Similarity is extracted. What does not fit is dropped. Later popular use treats lives as stages. That is not in the 1949 book as a clinical tool, and it is a misuse.
Van Gennep
A comparative survey of ethnography of its time. Not a key to all narrative. Ithaca’s washing is a better fit than the Cyclops.
Turner
Communitas can be romanticized. Not every threshold produces fellowship. Some produce a cave that eats guests.
Propp
Corpus specificity is the point. Applying the functions to Homer is a juxtaposition, not a result Propp authorized.
Jung
Level-of-analysis confusion: a psychological metaphor is not a factual mechanism, and not a Sumerian or Homeric source.
The territory
Use the map. Do not mistake it for the territory.
Peel the overlays back. What remains is a poem: a man who cannot get home, a woman who holds a house under siege, a son who has to grow in an absence, a crew that does not return.
The frameworks can help you see. They cannot replace the road.
