Victor Turner
What happens in the in-between, especially between people.
Structure
Ordinary roles and laws.
Liminality
Betwixt and between; symbols of death, disguise, inversion.
Communitas
A possible bond among those stripped of rank, possible, not guaranteed.
What was proposed
Building on van Gennep, Turner described liminality as a condition in which structures loosen, and communitas as a kind of unstructured bond among those undergoing passage. He later wrote, with Edith Turner, on Christian pilgrimage.
What it illuminated
Useful for pilgrim roads, initiations, and moments when a traveler is neither what they were nor what they will be.
Where it has been criticized
Communitas can be romanticized. Not every threshold produces fellowship; some produce hunger, chain gangs, or a cave.
As a lens
Name Turner when liminality is actually in question. Do not spray ‘liminal’ on every dusk photograph.

A refusal is valid information
These relationships are editorial. Similarity of vocabulary is not enough to add a story.
Verified example
The OdysseyThe Odyssey page: helps name the years when Odysseus is neither king nor corpse.
Weak fit
The WildernessA generation in camp is not automatically communitas. Hunger and graves are in the story too.
