The Hero’s Journey

Vladimir Propp · 1895–1970

Vladimir Propp

Functions in Russian wonder tales. Sequence before symbolism.

  1. Lack / villainy

A tale starts from damage or absence.

  2. Donor / agent

    A test, a gift, a magical means.

  3. Return / recognition

Arrival, branding, task, restoration, in the corpus he studied.

What was proposed

Morphology of the Folktale (1928) isolated thirty-one functions in a set of fairy tales. The sequence has a logic inside that corpus.

What it illuminated

A model of how some tales move: absentation, interdiction, villainy, receipt of a magical agent, return, recognition, wedding.

Where it has been criticized

Not a theory of myth, epic, scripture, or biography. Applying Propp to the Odyssey or to Inanna is a comparison, not a decoding.

As a lens

Keep Propp beside the maps as a reminder that narrative structure can be described without psychology. Do not imply his functions are Campbell’s stages in Slavic dress.

A refusal is valid information

These relationships are editorial. Similarity of vocabulary is not enough to add a story.

    The Odyssey

The Odyssey page: functions drawn from folktales, not Homeric epic. Resemblance is not identity of mechanism.
