Textual fact

Inanna holds a one-nindan measuring reed and a measuring line, of lapis. In the ETCSL composite they are removed at the sixth gate. One manuscript takes them at the first.

The tablet names gi-diš-nindan eš₂-gana₂ za-gin₃. A surveyor’s pair: reed for the straight, line for the stretch, made of an imported blue.

Do not identify it, without argument, with every rod-and-ring on a stele. Closest textual parallel. Not identity.

What kind of power is a kit that measures the world, taken in a realm that will not be surveyed?
