The Odyssey destroys a fleet, then a last ship, then a raft. Jonah’s sailors throw a passenger to save a hull. Endurance is crushed in sight of the men who must then become a boat-people.

A ship is not a symbol of ‘the self.’ It is a technology of many lives.
