Odysseus built the marriage bed around a living olive, the chamber around the trunk. The bed cannot be moved without cutting the tree.
Penelope orders the bed brought out for the stranger. The instruction is a trap for a false husband. A true one will know the bed cannot be brought.
He answers with carpentry: the olive still in the floor, the work of his hands. The test is technical before it is emotional.
Do not rush the symbol. First the fact. Then the question of a house that has learned not to trust faces.
